What a move in Fremantle really involves

Fremantle is the hardest access in the metro and the most enjoyable to plan. The West End is a heritage precinct: original stone buildings, narrow staircases, doorways built before standard desk widths existed, and streets where a semi-trailer is simply not an option.

We survey every Fremantle job in person. Photographs do not tell you that a landing turn is 900 mm, or that the only way a boardroom table leaves the first floor is in two pieces.

Access constraints we plan around here

These are the six things a relocation manager measures on the survey. They decide the fleet, the crew size and the length of the shutdown.

Heritage restrictions
Protection of original floors, staircases and doorways is a condition of access, and damage is expensive in ways ordinary buildings are not.
Narrow stairs and landings
Landing turns under 1,000 mm are common. Large desk tops and boardroom tables often have to be dismantled.
Street width
High Street and the West End lanes suit 4.5 t and 8 t vehicles. Semi-trailers stage elsewhere and shuttle in.
Port service offices
Port-adjacent tenancies may require port security induction for the crew, arranged ahead of the move date.
Parking permits
City of Fremantle loading permits are required for most kerbside work and have their own lead time.
No lift buildings
Many two- and three-storey West End buildings have no goods lift at all, so everything is a stair carry.
